Professional Diploma (Filmmaking)
Looking for career-focused practical filmmaking? Do you want to learn more about the work of different departments in film and get hands-on filmmaking experience before deciding on your career path?
Screen and Film School Brighton’s Professional Diploma is a 9-month part-time course designed to provide you with the essential skills required to successfully operate in the UK film and TV industry today. The course allows you to specialise in one field or become a self-sufficient freelancer such as a shooting producer director, editor, production coordinator or content creator.
Open to industry newcomers as well as experienced filmmakers, the Professional Diploma covers most modern filmmaking formats including shorts, documentary and branded content, and will provide you with unbridled access to industry standard filmmaking equipment and self-shooting kit bundles, as well as allocated budgets for your film projects.
The course also provides you with regular consultations with our in-house industry engagement team, guidance and support with short film festival submissions and work placement opportunities, plus full access to weekly Masterclass events and film craft workshops from industry names.

In Term 1, you will learn to manually expose a moving image on a digital film camera and will gain a grasp of modern shooting conventions for drama whilst utilising dynamic shot choices in the creation of a filmed sequence.
You will record sound to industry standard parameters and gain experience with modern LED lighting fixtures, attain a firm understanding of clapper protocol and the 180-degree rule, and learn how to demonstrate story structure and ‘Physical Screenwriting’.
In Term 2, you will explore documentary film conventions during actual guest interviews whilst controlling all technical aspects within real life scenarios where preparation time is limited. You will also gain experience with industry standard documentary admin such as call sheets and booking forms.
Additionally, you will have the chance to work with actors and develop a script or improvised performance.
By Term 3 you will be able to demonstrate proficiency with:
- Colour temperature, lighting gels, hard and soft light, direction and diffusion.
- Independent editing and project management on Premiere Pro.
- Planning and shooting a performance based filmed project either on location or at one of Screen and Film School Brighton’s studio sets.
- Performing in a Head of Department (HOD) role.

Term breaks: Christmas break from mid December to the first week in January, additional Easter break in April, and the course finishes in late May.
Minimum Requirements
Evidence of industry experience or evidence of filmmaking is advantageous but those new to filmmaking will also be considered.
Progression
Students can progress directly to a career in the film, television and screen industry in areas such as producing, directing, screenwriting, sound, post-production, cinematography and first assistant directing.
Course Fees
Because we’re an industry-led practical film school, we’re uniquely positioned to offer outstanding value and quality to all our students. Course fees are currently £3,750 per year (subject to review) and there are no compulsory additional course costs however we strongly recommend investing in a Terrabyte external hard drive.
This is a self-funded course, however we offer payment plans- either a 10 instalment monthly payment plan or splitting into three payments across the 9 months.
